Biscuits get a Game 1 Victory

The Montgomery Biscuits keep on winning after finishing their regular season in Jacksonville. The Biscuits won 4 out of 5 to finish the season winning 15 of their final 16 regular season games.

The Biscuits play the Mississippi Braves in the first round of the playoffs and have started the series with a win. Reid Brignac was the hero of the evening when his RBI single past the first-baseman brought Patrick Breen home for the winning run. Reid also had a 2 RBI double in the first inning to get the Biscuits started.

Southern League Honors

News from the Southern League's Website:

The red-hot Montgomery Biscuits have dominated the Southern League in the season's second-half, so it comes as no surprise that they also dominate the league's Postseason All-Star Team.

Five of the 15 players named to the SL's end-of-the-year All-Star squad are members of the Southern Division-leading Biscuits, including MVP Evan Longoria and Most Valuable Pitcher Chris Mason. The team was selected by a vote of the league's field managers, radio broadcasters and print media.

Longoria, the third overall selection in the 2006 Draft, hit .307 with 21 home runs, 78 runs scored and 76 RBIs before receiving a promotion to the Triple-A Durham Bulls. The 21-year-old third baseman was tied for the league lead in home runs at the time of his call-up and sat atop the circuit in both RBIs and runs scored. His 21 dingers for Montgomery established a new franchise record, as did his 37-game on-base streak (which took place between April 11 and May 20).

Mason -- a 23-year-old righty -- leads the league with 15 wins and a 2.53 ERA, while his 132 strikeouts rank fourth. The Devil Rays' second-round selection in the 2005 Draft, Mason has allowed three runs or less in 25 of his 27 starts this season. If he earns a victory in his final start of the regular season, then the North Carolina native will become the first 16-game winner in the SL since Dave Borkowski in 1998.

Longoria and Mason are joined by three teammates: catcher John Jaso, outfielder Fernando Perez and relief pitcher Dale Thayer. In addition to driving in 71 runs and scoring 58, Jaso ranks second in the league in batting (.320), third in on-base percentage (.409) and fifth in slugging percentage (.491). Perez, meanwhile, is hitting .304 with 80 runs scored, 29 stolen bases and nine triples. Thayer, a 26-year-old right-hander, went 9-0 with 21 saves and a 2.26 ERA before receiving a promotion to Durham.

We Love our Biscuits

The Montgomery Biscuits played their final regular season home game tonight if front of a large (for Montgomery) crowd. The game was a hitter's paradise with good performance from both teams. The only Carolina Mudcat player that I will mention is Johnny Raburn, the former Biscuit, who hit well tonight.

Vero Beach Devil Rays newcomer Patrick Cortelle redeemed himself tonight by making several good plays on the field and getting his first hit with the Biscuits. With a final score of 12-6, just about every Biscuit contributed and it would be impossible to mention them all.

I want to thank all of the Biscuits for their hard work this season. I have enjoyed every game that I was able to attend and hope to see them a couple more times at Riverwalk Stadium as they play their way into the Playoffs.

Can anyone say; Repeat!

Biscuits Player of the Week is a Mudcat

The Montgomery Biscuit's player of the week is Gaby Hernandez, the pitcher for the Carolina Mudcat's. Gaby Hernandez faced 11 batters in the first inning giving up 8 runs on 8 hits before being pulled from the mound by the demoralized Mudcats. Thanks Gaby from all the Biscuits Fans. The Mudcats never recovered and lost both games of the Double Header.

Congratulations to Brooks Badeaux who hit his first Home Run for the Biscuits. His home run hit followed a home run by Fernando Perez on the first two pitches of the second game of the Double Header. Both players have been solid hitters and reliable fielders for the Biscuits all year long.

Did I forget to mention that Chris Nowak hit a couple doubles but kept being stranded at second!

I was excited to get the game ball from pitcher Tim Corcoran after the second victory.

Franchise Record 8 Wins

The Biscuits broke a franchise record last night by winning it's 8th consecutive game. The team's current winning streak has helped to push the Biscuits into first place in the Southern Division. With the playoffs in just a few weeks, the team is playing and hitting well. A 7th inning 4 run rally with 2 outs was the only scoring excitement during the baseball game. Jake McGee pitched 7 strong innings.

The Biscuit will finish their regular season with an away stand against the Jacksonville Suns. The Jacksonville Suns are currently 2 games behind. I talked with coach Torres about coming into the playoffs and he is excited that the Biscuits get to play the team that they have to beat. It is up to the Biscuits to either win or lose their playoff position.

Update: Rhyne Hughes lost 4 teeth but his jaw was not broken. The Biscuits expect Rhyne to return next season.

Biscuit Win 7 In a Row

The Biscuits won their seventh game in a row on their return to Riverwalk Stadium to face the Carolina Mudcats. Fireworks celebrated the win and Montgomery has been strong on the mound and at the plate. Wade Davis allowed only one run it the first inning. John Jaso and Chris Nowak both hit doubles in the 8th Inning to combine to 3 RBIs.

The thrill of victory was dulled by an injury to Rhyne Hughes in the 8th Inning. While attempting to bunt, the foul ball smashed into his face and sent him to the ground hard. Riverwalk Stadium was quiet waiting for Rhyne to return to his feet. Rhyne walked off the field and, as reported on the Biscuit's website, was rushed to the hospital for surgery on a broken jaw.

For a 2006 flashback - It was good to see John Raburn back in Montgomery, it's just too bad he was wearing the Mudcat's uniform.

Hughes Triples To First Place

Rhyne Hughes hits a triple with two outs in the seventh inning to bring in the second run of the inning. Rhyne scores just minutes later on a triple by Reid Brignac to give the Biscuits a 3 run innings and the first lead of the night. A single with bases loaded in the ninth gives Rhyne 2 more RBIs as the Biscuit rally big to insure their victory sweep of the Birmingham Barons.

With a lose for the Jacksonville Suns, the Biscuits take a 1 game lead in the Southern Division with only 10 regular season games remaining.

Rhyne Hughes is relatively new to the Biscuits line-up after being brought up from Class A Vero Beach Devil Rays earlier this month. Rhyne has been a good hitter for the Biscuits and is often available after the game for autographs. I have Rhyne's home run ball from the Aug 17 lose to the Suns, which he was nice enough the autograph after the game.

Prochaska Pitches all 9 Innings

Mike Prochaska returns from the Durham Bulls to pitch a full 9 innings to beat the Birmingham Barons 6-1. Mike Prochaska has been back and forth between the AA Montgomery Biscuits and the AAA Durham Bulls several times this season. The Jacksonville Suns are just now finishing up their game against the Mississippi Braves and are leading by 5-1 going into the 9th inning. A win for the Suns will keep them in a tie for first place in the Southern Division.

The Biscuits will close their series against the Barons tomorrow night then return to Riverwalk Stadium on Saturday to face the Carolina Mudcats. I'm looking forward to the final home stand for the Biscuits before the playoffs.

Biscuits Tie for First Place

The Montgomery Biscuits who are playing the Birmingham Baron on the road, have won their first three games to tie the Jacksonville Suns for first place in the Southern Division. Gabby Martinez has played an important role in the victories by hitting his way out of his recent batting slump.

After winning the 2006 Championship, the Biscuits are looking to finish the second half strong and roll into the playoffs with some momentum.
